Warriors in tie for
first in MPSF

Hawaii sweeps Stanford
for the second straight day

STANFORD, Calif. >> Stanford played tough. Hawaii played tougher.

The second-ranked Warriors swept the No. 9 Cardinal for the second straight night at Maples Pavilion, moving into a tie for the top spot in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in the process. The 30-21, 30-18, 30-24 victory improved Hawaii's overall record to 8-2 and has the Warriors sharing the MPSF lead with No. 3 Brigham Young at 5-1.

Hawaii was again led by junior hitter Delano Thomas, who put down 17 kills and hit .652. Sophomore hitter Pedro Azenha added 16 kills during the 75-minute match played in front of 561.

"I thought we did another nice job tonight," said Hawaii coach Mike Wilton, his team handing the Cardinal their fifth straight loss. "There was a couple of moments when we got a little bit lax, kind of snoozed. But credit Stanford -- they were doing some good things tonight and got on some pretty nice runs.

"We served well again and, for the most part, passed pretty well. It all comes down to passing and good set selection."

Freshman Brian Beckwith and senior Kimo Tuyay shared setting duties, with Tuyay getting into the match with Hawaii leading 24-15 in Game 2. The pair had the Warriors hitting .469 for the night, including an impressive .739 in Game 2.

The Cardinal (5-9, 3-7) hit .174, getting six kills each from junior blocker Craig Buell and sophomore reserve hitter William Clayton.

"We just want to keep getting better," Wilton said. "Pedro had another slow start, but I'm glad I left him in. He did well. And Delano just went off.

"Jose (Delgado) didn't have great hitting numbers (six kills, .214) but he passed well for us and did other things. And I thought Alfred (Reft, libero) was exceptional."

Reft had eight of Hawaii's 29 digs and passed all 15 balls. Delgado passed all 36 balls without a reception error.

Hawaii was in control the entire match. Stanford's biggest threats came toward the end of Games 1 and 3.

In the first game, the Warriors saw a 27-13 lead dwindle to 27-20. The Cardinal had two of their six blocks during the 7-0 run.

Josh Stanhiser had a kill and was in on a block with Azenha to give Hawaii game point. One sideout later, Azenha ended it with his sixth kill.

Game 3 was a replay, with the Warriors jumping out to a 26-16 lead. A kill by Clayton helped pull Stanford to within 25-22, but Hawaii closed it out on a 5-2 run, getting two kills from Bender and the match ender on a line shot by Thomas.

Mauli'a LaBarre, perfect on 11 swings Friday, had seven kills in eight attempts with one error last night. The sophomore middle hit .948 for the series and was in on a total of 11 blocks, including one solo and two assists last night.

Hawaii headed out to Stockton, Calif., today and will take on No. 15 Pacific (4-9, 2-6) tomorrow and Tuesday. Depending on today's weather, the Warriors will either enjoy part of the day in San Francisco or head to the outlet mall near Tracy.

"Pacific's going to be a different kind of deal, a different kind of team," Wilton said. "They have a couple of guys who are pretty good and we'll be looking at a lot of film."
