Each Friday morning of the semester, Honolulu Community College students in the Fire Environmental Emergency Response Program donate four hours to remove invasive plants as part of their wildfire training class at Lyon Arboretum. This year, the group is clearing ancient taro patches and preparing them for replanting. Jonah Wilson, foreground, and Lon Shiroma cut up a tree trunk yesterday to clear a taro patch. It is estimated that their work has saved Lyon Arboretum more than $100,000 in labor costs in six years.
