Vitale punishes Menne at Super Brawl

Waipahu's Falaniko Vitale put a beating on Ultimate Fighting Championships legend Dave Menne in the main event of Super Brawl XXXIII last night at the Blaisdell Arena.

Vitale won by unanimous decision, closing Menne's left eye in the first round and drawing blood from his nose in the second.

Local fighter Eddie Yagin opened up a cut on UFC legend Jens Pulver's head in the second round of a kickboxing duel.

Ronald Jhun stopped Kyle Brees by technical knockout in the third round.

Harris Sarmiento won the 155-pound semifinals. Bryson Monterde, Justin Eilers and Ed Nawalu also won their bouts.

No. 15 Seasiders get back to winning at home

Austin Smylie led all scorers with 20 points and Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Chaminade 77-66 last night in Pacific West Conference basketball in Laie.

Michael Stowell scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Seasiders.

Bryon Sykes led the Silverswords with 17 points.

The Seasiders (17-3, 7-1 PacWest) recovered from a loss at Hilo last week, and opened a full three-game lead on Hawaii Pacific and Montana State-Billings in the conference standings. Chaminade dropped to 6-12, 3-5 in the conference.

Abbott pitches perfect game against Hawaii

Tennessee's Monica Abbott tossed a perfect game as the Lady Vols defeated the Hawaii softball team 2-0 in the eighth Hawaii Paradise Classic at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Rainbow Wahine bounced back from the loss to defeat St. Mary's 1-0 in the next game. The third-seeded Rainbow Wahine play the second-seeded Lady Vols today at 1 p.m.

Hatch pulls Seasiders out of a jam: Chynna Wilcox singled in Echo Hatch for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Brigham-Young Hawaii softball team needed extra innings to beat Biola 8-7 yesterday on the final day of the Las Vegas tournament.

Vulcans split: Hawaii-Hilo left the Las Vegas tournament with a 2-3 record after losing 16-2 to Pittsburg State and beating Longwood College 7-1 yesterday.

Sea Warriors and Seawolves split again

The Hawaii Pacific baseball team defeated Sonoma State 11-9 in the afternoon game of a double header at Keehi Lagoon. Geoffrey Say went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Brandon Sato drove in three runs as the Sea Warriors prevented the Seawolves from rallying.

Sonoma State scored three runs in the sixth inning in a come-from-behind 5-3 win in the early game.

Wallace to entertain Quarterback Club

Hawaii basketball coach Riley Wallace will be the featured speaker at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Former Pro Bowl safety Joey Browner and Las Vegas talk show host Rich Perez will also speak.

Wallace will be on hand to pick up his award as the club's Sports Person for January along with Wahine basketball player Jade Abele.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda restaurant in Honolulu with the program to follow at noon.
