Unstable air produces
funnel clouds in Aiea

A forecaster says residents
should anticipate more today

Two funnel clouds were spotted over Aiea yesterday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The funnel clouds formed at about 5 p.m., but did not touch down or cause any damage, said NWS forecaster Ray Tanabe.

He said residents should anticipate more of the weather formations as the conditions to create funnel clouds -- light tradewinds during the day, which causes the land to warm and the air to become unstable -- should persist today.

"They're fairly rare," Tanabe said. "But it's always a possibility."
