LINDSEY POLLOCK / PR CONSULTANT

Airline official urged
support of isle events

Lindsey Pollock, a former Hawaiian Airlines public relations official who persuaded the carrier to become an original sponsor of the Merrie Monarch Festival, died Thursday at home. He was 59.

Pollock created discount travel for participating hula halaus, and the airline also flew in judges and provided tickets for hula workshops. The hula festival is held annually in Hilo.

After joining Hawaiian in 1973, Pollock positioned the carrier to sponsor a number of island festivals and other events, including canoe races.

After leaving Hawaiian, Pollock provided consulting services to a number of businesses. Most recently, he worked with American Savings Bank on its new kalo leaf corporate logo program.

Pollock graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 1962 before earning a journalism degree from the University of Oregon.

He served two years in the Peace Corps and taught at the University of Hawaii and with the state Department of Education in special education before joining the airline.

Survivors include four sisters, two brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Borthwick Mortuary in Honolulu. There will also be visitation at 10 a.m. Wednesday, followed by a noon service. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Hawaiian Memorial Park in Kaneohe.
