Big Isle police plan crackdown on racing

Big Island police will be cracking down on young drivers racing on public roads subdivisions around the island, the department has announced.

"Racing and excessively rapid acceleration on public roads is both dangerous and foolish, and we will be increasing vigilance in areas where we've received a large number of complaints," said Traffic Services Sgt. Randy Apele said.

State law provides that anyone convicted of racing, including drag racing, is subject to a maximum penalty of a $500 fine and six months in jail.

Anyone convicted of "burning out," intentional screeching of a vehicle's tires, is subject to a maximum penalty of a $500 fine and community service sentence.

Kona man is nabbed for alleged threats

A 30-year-old Kona man was charged Friday with a variety of offenses after he allegedly threatened his former girlfriend and wouldn't let her leave her residence, Big Island police reported.

James Boyd Brumaghim, of Kealakekua, was arrested Wednesday for violating a temporary restraining order when he went to his former girlfriend's residence last Sunday, police said. He is being held in the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $18,000 bail and is also being held on a no-bail warrant for violating parole.
