R. Field founder
separates from
Foodland stores

Richard Field, founder of the R. Field Wine Co., and Foodland Super Markets Ltd. are parting company after six years.

Field told Foodland officials in December that he would be resigning his position as director of wines, spirits and fine foods for Foodland at the end of January, the company's spokeswoman Sheryl Toda said.

The R. Field Wine Co. began in 1977. Field had an independent specialty food and wine store, located at the Ward Centre, that Foodland bought in 1997.

After the locally owned grocery chain purchased the rights to the company, Foodland moved its operations into its Beretania and Kailua stores. An R. Field wine section later opened in Foodland's Market City store.

Toda said yesterday that the R. Field Co. would continue to operate at the Foodland stores.

"R. Field Co. stores will continue to be managed by current R. Field Co. store managers, Kevin Toyama and Marvin Chang. We are grateful for the contribution Richard has made to growing our business in the six years that he has been with our company. We wish him well in his new endeavors," she said.

Field did not return calls for comment and Toda was not able to say what new endeavors he is likely to pursue.
