Islanders open season on the road

The Hawaiian Islanders begin defense of their arenafootball2 West Division title with a road game on March 27.

The Islanders face a division foe, the Central Valley Coyotes, in Fresno, Calif., to open their 16-game regular-season schedule. They will play the Bossier City Battle Wings on April 17 in their first home game at Blaisdell Arena.

Kickoff for the Islanders' eight home games is 6:30 p.m.

The Islanders went 11-7 last season and won the West Division championship in Cal Lee's first year as head coach. For more information, call 532-7362.

Soccer Buzz names Kai All-American

Hawaii striker Natasha Kai was named to the Soccer Buzz All-America third team yesterday for her 29 goals for the Rainbow Wahine this year.

Kai, a sophomore from Kahuku, is the first Rainbow Wahine to earn All-America recognition after being named to the magazine's freshman third team last year. Jennifer Hamm was an honorable mention freshman All-American in 1997.

Zodrow nets National Player of the Week award

Kaneohe's Brian Zodrow is the AVCA Divison I-II Men's National Player of the Week after leading No. 13 Pacific to an upset of No. 5 UC Santa Barbara.

Zodrow, who prepped at Saint Louis, followed up a 20-kill performance against Santa Barbara with a career-high 24 kills in a close loss to Cal State Northridge.

Local pair bringing medals home from Japan

Jordan Kealoha and Anthony Kwon each medaled at the First Tokyo International Juvenile Judo Championships at Tokyo, Japan, over the weekend.

Kealoha took a silver medal in the 46-kilogram class of 11-year olds while Kwon will bring home a bronze from the 35-kilogram divison for 11-year olds. Both athletes train at the Hodokan Judo Club in Manoa and will compete in the junior nationals in Honolulu this summer.
