Texas finishes
sweep of ’Bows

The Texas Longhorns backed freshman right-hander Kyle McCulloch with early offense and he blanked the Hawaii Rainbows for seven innings last night at Murakami Stadium.

The Longhorns (3-0) swept the three-game series by winning two tough, competitive games Friday and Saturday and then cruising to a 10-1 victory yesterday before a Super Bowl Sunday crowd of 707.

McCulloch allowed a hit in each of the first three innings, then retired 12 of the next 16 'Bows. The only UH runners reached base by getting hit with a pitch, walking or courtesy of a Texas fielding error.

"I think Kyle kind of set the tone for us. He went out and pitched. I mean no disrespect, but he played catch with the catcher and let the hitters do what they could," said Texas coach Augie Garrido.

"I'm happy with the way we bounced back from Saturday's adversity and we took advantage of every little stumble they made."

As they did in the first two games, the Longhorns scored in the first inning for a 2-0 lead.

UH starter Keahi Rawlins hit leadoff batter Dooley Prince with a 1-2 pitch. Prince scored when Nathan Warrick guided a sharp ground ball just inside the third-base bag for a double. Curtis Thigpen sacrificed Warrick to third. He scored on Taylor Teagarden's grounder to short.

Texas made use of a successful sacrifice bunt for the sixth time in the series when David Maroul pushed Drew Stubbs over to third after he opened the inning with a ground double down the left-field line. Seth Johnson's high bouncer into left field brought Stubbs home.

Another sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly helped the Longhorns increase their lead to 5-0 in the third. Prince singled on the first pitch and took second on Warrick's sacrifice. With Prince running, Thigpen drew ball four, but UH catcher Matt Inouye's throw to third was wild. Prince scored and Thigpen advanced to second.

That ended Rawlins' stint on the mound. He was replaced by Stephen Bryant.

Thigpen then stole third and scored on Teagarden's long fly to the wall in left-center.

"We simply did not have a good effort today and it all started on the mound," said UH coach Mike Trapasso, who had 17 points written down to go over with the Rainbows (0-3) in practice this week.

"We had zero intensity, zero competitiveness and that just sucked the life out of us. I thought Stephen Bryant came in and settled the game for us and Darrell Fisherbaugh was solid in relief."

A fielding error by UH first baseman Andrew Sansaver on Prince's bounding ball over the bag with one out led to the sixth Texas run in the fifth. Prince stole second and scored on Thigpen's two-out single to center.

Texas added a pair of runs in the seventh and ninth innings with the help of UH errors.

The Rainbows averted a shutout in the bottom of the ninth when they loaded the bases with one out on a single by pinch hitter Paki Lum, a walk and hit batter. Texas' third pitcher, Buck Cody, then wild-pitched Lum home.

In the first three innings, Hawaii had runners on second twice with one out and on third once with two outs, but McCullough kept the 'Bows off the board.

In short, the Rainbows were unable to respond as they did in the first two games to the Longhorns' run production.

"We're going to be a good club. Just competing for two games doesn't make it happen," said Trapasso. "We knew a team like Texas would expose some weaknesses, things we have to work on."
