Jim Klaczak has been hired as the head football coach for Pac-Three, athletic director Dan Molin said yesterday.

Klaczak is a physical education and history teacher at St. Anthony, one of the Maui schools along with Kaahumanu Hou and Seabury Hall that make up the football squad.

Klaczak was the first coach in the University of San Francisco's football history, having started up the team in 1981. He's also been an assistant at LSU, Texas A&M, San Francisco State, Menlo College and Arizona State.

"He has a tremendous background and has a lot of great ideas on how to unite the three schools for football," Molin said. "The kids are already gravitating toward him. He'll be instilling a strong work ethic, and that's what the kids want."

Klaczak spent the last two seasons as an assistant for Lahainaluna.

Pac-Three went 2-8 (1-7 Maui Interscholastic League) last fall in its first year of competition.

"I'm happy to have the job and the challenge will be great," said Klaczak, whose specialty is as an offensive-line coach. "It was an arduous interview process and I was fortunate to come out on top."

Molin said the job attracted 10 applicants.
