Irish memorial is set to honor Donnelly

An Irish wake for longtime Star-Bulletin columnist Dave Donnelly has been set for Thursday.

The memorial will start at 5:30 p.m. at Murphy's Bar & Grill, 2 Merchant St., according to Don Murphy, the bar's owner and a friend of Donnelly.

Donnelly died Jan. 24.

"Dave was very clear on what he wanted," Murphy said. "It will be an Irish wake, but the music, food and friends representing the many interests and people he held dear will range from the Irish, Hawaiian and his lifelong involvement with the theater."

Former broadcasting pal and showman Tom Moffatt will emcee the evening, which will include singer Jimmy Borges, Don Conover and a host of other local entertainers.

Murphy also noted that Donnelly's friends are developing a scholarship for theater students in his memory.

"Dave loved to watch young people coming up and sharing his love of the theater. This is a fitting honor for him, and we are pleased to pull it together," he said.

Donations for the scholarship fund may be brought to Thursday's event or sent to the University of Hawaii Foundation, noted as "Dave Donnelly Memorial," at P.O. Box 11270, Honolulu, HI 96828.

For further information, call Murphy's at 531-0422 or Sweeney Communications at 533-0033.

Funeral services have not been announced.
