Wie won’t play
for Punahou

Michelle Wie won't be playing high school golf at Punahou this year, according to Buffanblu coach John Proud.

A freshman at Punahou, Wie originally planned on playing competitively at the high school level this year.

But the 14-year-old national women's public links champion will instead concentrate on playing in pro tournaments and other national events.

Wie has been getting heavy national exposure for her forays into pro tournaments. She missed the cut in the men's Sony Open in Hawaii two weeks ago.

"Sure, we're disappointed," Proud said. "It's not only the low scores we'll miss. It's what else she brings -- experience and her own disciplines and habits. It would have been good for all of the girls to have her around.

"But we have a lot of great girls who can shoot low scores and that's something we can fall back on."
