These amphibious assault vehicles were used yesterday at Nuupia Ponds at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, to break open thick mats of invasive weeds and improve stilt nesting and feeding opportunities for the birds. These 'Mud Ops' also give drivers valuable practice. The back-and-forth action creates a "moat and island" terrain that discourages predators. Cpl. Wesley Essary, left, and Sgt. Victor O'Neal sat on top of an AAV as two other vehicles plowed the mud flats.
