Let’s hope monkey
biz is minimal

IT'S the Year of the Monkey, which Chinese astrology books tell you is full of rascal happenings and surprises. My breaking of a hip in S.F. last month occurred before the Monkey came swinging around, so they can't blame that on the Monkey ... Chinese New Year should be a big deal at KHNL News, where three members of the news staff are Chinese. I'm speaking of Diane Ako, Jodi Leong and Steph-anie Lum, the latter of whom manages to get up and go on the air weekday mornings at 5:30 a.m. ...

STAR-BULLETIN photog Dennis Oda showed up for an assignment with a slightly handicapped camera after a run-in with a guy at the Sony Open. A security guard witnessed the incident and chased down the gentleman to tell him of the damage and asked his name. Moments later, an apologetic Paul Azinger, who was playing in the Open, gave Oda his card and asked him to contact him ...

Tribute to Wally

AT 78, but fit as a fiddle, is Wally Yonamine. He and wife Jane, were both present at the unveiling of the "Wally Yonamine Exhibit" at the Honolulu International Airport. Mufi Hannemann and Yonamine's son, Paul, came up with idea of putting the exhibit at the airport after talks with travel execs in Japan. The idea was that Yonamine was a sports standout in Hawaii, Japan and the U.S. mainland so he's sure to have many fans among the 2 million visitors who'll see the exhibit near Gate 25. Wally will be the KITV interview guest of Jill Kuramoto on Jan. 27 ...

A seven-piece band headed by jazz great Gabe Baltazar accompanied the "Three Crooners." A new Brat Pack in the making? ...

IT'S Girl Scout Cookie time again, which you'd know if you watched "My Wife and Kids" this week. So forget about any "no-cookie" New Year's resolution through Feb. 9 at least. Everyone's favorites -- and Thin Mints still holds the title as the No. 1 most popular Girl Scout cookie -- are on sale throughout the islands. The scouts sent more than 4,000 boxes to troops in dangerous territory. Call 595-8400 or check at the booth nearest you for more information ...

Real deal

COMPADRES is celebrating its first "Real Deal" menu of 2004. Chef Alfonso Navarro is recreating dishes from his native Jalisco. The winter menu showcases oyster shots as an appetizer.
