A bit of Maui history
comes home via eBay


THERE'S a glass display case at Maui Soda & Ice Works in Wailuku that has an impressive collection of old bottles. Many came from avid collector Mel Taketa. The CEO of Maui Soda, Buddy Nobriga, gave him some bottles when he started his collection. That was back in 1986, and Mel recently had a great gift for Buddy. It's a German-made seltzer siphon, circa 1930, with the words "Maui Soda Works" printed on it. He found the sprltzer siphon on the eBay Web site. "I had never seen one before," he said, and neither had Nobriga. The siphon now occupies a prime spot in the Maui Soda display case ...

BACK in October, the Waikiki Community Center awarded Cha Thompson as a Treasure of Waikiki at the Hilton Hawaiian Village along with Pleasant Holidays, LLC, and Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom for all they've done for the Waikiki community. Fame is fleeting, however, and Cha had to break the news to her cast at DFS Galleria that they've been given their two-week notice. They've been performing Hawaiian music and reportedly will be replaced by a harp, flute and piano. The final show will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 30, with Jeff Apaka starring. Any more Hawaiian shows around? ...

The old cannery building on Nimitz Highway is now at 100 percent occupancy. The addition of nine shops, all part of the Gentry Design Center, will join the likes of Indich Collection, Studio Becker, Pacific Orient Traders, Kitchen Concepts, Interior Accents, Site Shop and Piano Planet. With the real estate market so hot, you can stop here to furnish your entire home. It's the latest version of a one-stop home shopping mall ...

THIS weekend Don Conover celebrates his piano-playing gig at the Original Chuck's Steak House on Beach Walk in Waikiki. To celebrate, there'll be hula, guest singers, piano bar music and free pupu. Everyone's invited to show up between 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday ... Final auditions for HPU's upcoming "Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris," will take place at 7 p.m. tomorrow at 7 p.m., and noon Saturday and Sunday on the HPU Windward campus. There are no non-singing roles ...

FROM the national cooking show, "Two Fat Ladies," Hawaii's version, starting Saturday, is called "Two Skinny Chefs."
