Radio stations play
musical chairs
in ratings

Perry and Price and KSSK have retained their hold on the top of the Arbitron ratings, but there have been changes among those vying to unseat the heritage station and its morning team.

Michael W. Perry and Larry Price's show on the combined KSSK-FM 92.3 and AM 590 raked in 19 percent of the adult morning audience.

Also, among listeners ages 25 to 54, Billy V., Lina Girl and Pipi on KCCN-FM 100.3 gained one-tenth of a share point and a bump from No. 3 to No. 2 from the last survey. They are up nearly two full points and two ranking-rungs from a year ago.

The morning show at KRTR-FM 96.3 dipped from a high of No. 2 in fall 2002 and in the last ratings survey in summer 2003. Chris Reiser had garnered a No. 2 ranking with a 9.4 percent share of the 6 a.m.-to-10 a.m. audience before being let go in September, just before the start of the fall 2003 survey. He was replaced by long-time TV anchor Dan Cooke, whose third-ranked show garnered a 7.3 share of the audience.

No. 4 KDNN-FM 98.5, with Lanai and Augie, had been at No. 5 in both summer 2003 and fall 2002 but gained more than a full share point this time around.

Rounding out the top five among adult listeners was the morning team of Rory Wild and Gregg Hammer with a 6.1 share. The team had been ranked at No. 3 with a 6.3 share a year ago.

New Wave Broadcasting LP flipped the Hawaiian music format of its KHUI-FM 99.5 to a format known as "Bob-FM" just before the start of the Arbitron survey, which began Sept. 18. The station now primarily plays hits of the '80s and '90s.

With its previous format, the station had tied for No. 8 among listeners 12 and older in the summer 2002 survey, with 4.6 percent of the listeners. Following the format flip, it is tied at No. 21 with a 0.9 share.

After weeding out the 24-and-under listeners, adult listening from 6 a.m. to midnight has 99.5 tied at No. 19 with country music KHCM-AM 940 and multiethnic KNDI-AM 1270 with a 1.4 share.

Former KHUI Program Director Mahlon Moore, whose position was eliminated with the format flip, has launched an Internet radio station to mirror the old KHUI playlist. The station at www.breezeofhawaii.com will be music-intensive with artists including The Brothers Cazimero, Na Leo, and Keali'i Reichel. There will be no live announcers and "listeners will be able to see on the Web site the title and artist of any song playing. Special attention will be given to traditional Hawaiian music and the Hawaiian culture," Moore said in a statement.

The Web-cast will be good for office workers who have trouble receiving over-the-air broadcast signals, either locally or globally, he said.

Moore hopes the station will be supported by advertising in either audio or visual Web formats or a combination thereof.
