More spots created for Triathlon

World Triathlon Corporation is adding a new Olympic-distance qualifying race to provide Hawaii residents the chance to earn spots in the 2004 Ironman Triathlon World Championship.

The new race, which will result in 35 Ironman berths for Big Island residents and 20 more for competitors from the rest of Hawaii, is set for June 13.

"Our goal is to make this triathlon a world-class event and one of Ironman's most desirable qualifying races," event director Diana Bertsch said in a release.

The race will begin at Hapuna Beach, and the bike course will utilize part of Queen Kaahumanu Highway, as does the Ironman bike route.
