What’s in a name
-- to a restaurant?

THE Thai restaurant on Waialae Avenue called The White Elephant may have found its name to be something of a white elephant. After a relatively short life, it disappeared and was replaced by Siam Palace ... And at the Ewa end of Waialae, a long-established restaurant, Eastern Garden, has closed ... Dixie Grill has started serving breakfast at its Ward Avenue and Aiea sites, much to the delight of early risers. Among the first to sample the new menu, which includes the like of crab omelets and homemade Southern-style biscuits, was Jamie Hartnett, KSSK promo director, who gave it two thumbs up ...

THEN there was the golfing enthusiast who left his office last Friday and cracked up his secretary with a slip of tongue: "I'm going out to watch Michelle Tee wee off." ... Filmmaker Edgy Lee won't be able to watch the repeat of her TV special, "The Ice Epidemic," because she'll be attending the Waikiki Shell concert of Bonnie Raitt and Robert Cray ... Former isle newscaster Karen Waygood e-mails from Atlanta where she's now working, "I hear you got a new hip." Well not exactly. Kaiser physicians in San Francisco implanted a plate and screw." Waygood continues, "My left hip was replaced at the end of October with the ceramic on ceramic model golf great Jack Nicklaus has, which may explain my sudden desire to putt. I can't decide if the best part is being able to move without pain or the temporary disabled parking pass." ...

Taste of Italy

THE vivacious owner of Office Pavilion, Gerri Hayes, has turned her company into one of Hawaii's top -- if not the No. 1 woman-owned business -- stopped by Sergio's for a glass of wine before heading to Sunday night's Hale Aina Awards ceremony. The visit to Sergio's set her to planning for her annual trek to Italy where she vacations for at least a month at a time. But if you're not lucky enough to have a visit to Italy in your future, Sergio's does offer Northern Italian cuisine that's reminiscent of the real thing ...

WHAT people are willing to spend for the Manoa Valley Theatre fund-raiser honoring me for my contributions to theater in Hawaii seems staggering to me. Though the event in the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom isn't until April 10, ticket prices have already been set. Prices for tables are $1,750, $2,500 and $3,500. Among the items up for bid is an 18K gold, yellow sapphire ring designed by DK Kinds for Haimoff & Haimoff Creations in Gold at the Halekulani. It has 3.10 carats and retails for $1,655 ... And guess who went shopping at Haimoff and Haimoff this week. None other than actor Morgan Freeman. He's a favorite of DK designer Deanna Wanders, so she sent him a bottle of champagne after his purchases ...

Sushi for Renee?

ON a recent trip to New York and Chicago, Cox Radio marketing director Scott Mackenzie gorged on the famous sushi at Nobu's, and sitting next to him was Renee Zellwegger. She's once again eating for her role in a sequel to "Bridget Jones' Diary." He thinks she's even larger than in the original movie about a Zaftig woman looking for love ...
