COURTESY NCL AMERICA
When Pride of Aloha, currently sailing as Norwegian Sky, undergoes a remodeling in May, her hull will be decked with leis, a symbol of Hawaii's hospitality. Designed by Honolulu artist Linda Umstead, the artwork was selected by Norwegian Cruise Line from dozens of submissions. The company invited Hawaii artists to participate in a competition to decorate the ship's hull. Umstead has more than 25 years of experience creating advertising images and logos, Web sites and promotional materials. She will receive a $10,000 cash award and a cruise for two aboard the Pride of Aloha.

Amcon's board OKs reverse split

Amcon Distributing Co., the parent of Hawaiian Natural Water Co., said yesterday that its board has approved a one-for-six reverse stock split.

The Omaha, Neb.-based company, which purchased Hawaiian Natural Water in December 2001 for $2.9 million in cash and stock, said its board was recommending the reverse split primarily to reduce administrative and mailing costs associated with the maintenance of small stockholder accounts and to provide small stockholders with an opportunity to liquidate their shares easily.

The split would cash out all shareholders holding less than six shares.

Amcon distributes consumer products that include beverages, candy, tobacco, groceries, food service, frozen and chilled foods, and health and beauty care products.

The reverse split, which is subject to shareholder approval at the company's March 11 annual meeting, would take effect as soon as practical after the meeting.

Amcon's stock, which closed at $4.40 yesterday, fell more than 31 percent in 2003 but is up about 11 percent this year.

Search starts for UH business dean

Faye Kurren, president and chief executive officer of Hawaii Dental Service, will head the search for a new dean of the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Business Administration.

She is serving as chairwoman of an 18-member advisory committee, which includes representatives from the college and the Hawaii business community. The group plans to conduct initial screenings of applicants starting Feb. 12.

Former Dean David McClain was promoted to vice president of academic affairs at UH. Associate dean Jim Wills has been acting as interim dean since June.

A job description and other information is available at www.hawaii.edu/executivesearch/business.

AFL-CIO to hit supermarket chains

As part of a new strategy, the powerful AFL-CIO labor union called yesterday for its members across the nation to implement a broader attack against three big supermarket chains locked in a bitter strike with Southern California grocery clerks.

The plan, worked out during a meeting in Washington, D.C., between officials from the AFL-CIO -- the nation's largest federation of local unions --- and the United Food and Commercial Workers union focuses on attacking the parent companies of Albertson's, Vons and Ralphs in their markets elsewhere.

Pleasanton-based Safeway, one of the largest grocery chains in North America, is parent of Safeway. Albertson's Inc. is based in Boise, Idaho, and Ralphs' parent, Kroger Co., is based in Cincinnati.

Other elements include wider use of informational pickets outside California, town hall meetings, demonstrations at the homes of company executives and pressuring big investors to punish the companies for their stance in the dispute by selling off their shares.
