Vulcans fall to Jayhawks in baseball

At Kailua-Kona, Kansas used a seven-run sixth inning to help rally from a 8-2 deficit and defeat Hawaii-Hilo 14-9 yesterday in a baseball game at Simmons Field.

The Jayhawks (3-1) used seven hits, an error and two walks to take the lead from the Vulcans (1-3). A two-run double by catcher Sean Richardson ignited the rally.

UHH had led 5-0 after three innings and 8-2 after five.

Kansas added three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull away. The Vulcans managed just one run after the fourth when shortstop Patrick Hawkins scored on a fielder's choice in the seventh.

The teams continue their seven-game series with a doubleheader today starting at 11 a.m. The series concludes tomorrow back in Hilo with a single game scheduled for 6 p.m. at Francis Wong Stadium.
