A storm 1,500 miles northwest of the islands will bring 12- to 20-foot waves to the north shores of all islands except the Big Island today. Earlier, the National Weather Service had predicted 30-foot-plus waves would hit Oahu's North Shore this afternoon. But National Weather Service marine forecaster Bob Burke said the storm system that created the swell weakened, decreasing the expected height of the surf. Though the surf will not be as large, it will last longer, he said. Waves of 15 feet and up are expected to persist until Thursday. Above, a surfer rode a wave almost 20 feet in height yesterday at Pipeline on the North Shore.
