Exhibit of baseball legend to be unveiled

The state Department of Transportation will unveil an exhibit of baseball legend Wally Yonamine's memorabilia tomorrow during a private ceremony at Honolulu Airport.

Yonamine was born in Maui in 1925. He was only the third American to play baseball for Japan and is credited with bringing hard sliding, infield grounders and diving for fly balls to Japanese baseball.

The Wally Yonamine Exhibit will be housed on the airport's second floor opposite Gate 25. Previously, the memorabilia was housed at the Japanese Cultural Center in Moiliili.

Vaccination available for those at risk for flu

State health officials say it is not too late to get a flu shot.

The Department of Health is encouraging people at high risk for complications from the flu to get vaccinated.

If an individual's doctor does not have vaccine available, the department said the physician can refer the person to a department clinic for a flu shot.

Those at high risk include healthy children 6 to 23 months old, adults 65 years and older, and pregnant women in their second or third trimester during flu season, health officials said.

People who are not at high risk who want to be protected from the flu are being told to call their doctors about a new nasal spray flu vaccine for healthy people 5 through 49 years old.

The department said has provided 1,500 doses of the spray vaccine without cost to Hawaii physicians. Hawaii is seeing more cases of influenza than at the same time last year because of an earlier than usual start of the flu season, the department said.
