Punahou rolls
over Saint Louis

Punahou lived up to its billing as the state's No. 2 team by rolling over Saint Louis 61-42 last night at McCabe Gym.

The Buffanblu sprinted out to a 13-2 first-quarter lead and eventually quashed the Crusaders every time they gained some momentum throughout the final three quarters.

"We're improving," said Punahou coach Greg Tacon, whose team climbed to 4-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. "We're a young team and we were effective with our shot selection in our half-court game tonight. I'm not going to say we're the same caliber team as Iolani. Not even close. But we'll keep on competing and try to improve mentally."

Forwards Spencer McLachlin and Brenton Lee and point guard Jeremiah Ostrowski had the hot early hands for Punahou, which had a decisive edge on the boards.

After Punahou's dominant opening 13-2 run, Saint Louis (0-4) showed a little spark by holding the Buffanblu scoreless for the final few minutes of the first quarter. The Crusaders also had a 6-2 mini-spurt of their own midway through the second and cut it to 20-10, but McLachlin's trey and Lee's 18-footer showed the Buffanblu weren't about to let the home team take over.

"You can't start by shooting 1-for-10 in the first quarter," Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan said. "We got it to 10 points and that's where you want to be at, but then we gave up some easy buckets and it put us in a hole again."

McLachlin, a 6-foot-6 freshman, was a major factor on the boards and scored nine of his 14 points in the first half. Ostrowski finished with a game-high 18 points, while Lee, who added a bundle of assists and rebounds, had 12 points.

After the break, the Crusaders started hitting from the outside and managed to outscore Punahou 14-13 in the third period. Guard Bo Ronduen led the way with five of those points, but Saint Louis still trailed 42-26 heading to the fourth.

"We had some lapses, but those lapses were caused by Saint Louis," Tacon said. "We did a good job rebounding -- and we have to sort of rebound by committee with Spencer and Brenton doing their usual good jobs there. But we absolutely had to hold our ground inside against Saint Louis' aggressive and competitive athletes.

"I know what they're (the Crusaders) going through. They just have to keep competing and they'll be all right. They have a lot of pride."

Despite an 11-4 run midway through the final quarter -- sparked by B.J. Batts' 3-pointer and two jumpers and Keao Monteilh's two acrobatic drives -- the closest the Crusaders got was a 51-39 deficit.

The Buffanblu cruised to victory from there.

Batts finished with 10 points in the final period, but he was offset by Ostrowski, who scored seven last-period points, including a long-range 3-pointer.

Monteilh had a team-high 13 for Saint Louis.
