Iolani, Kamehameha
play to scoreless tie

The Kamehameha Warriors have every reason to gag -- and spit -- after their second tie of the young season with the Iolani Raiders.

They won't, though, being a happy-go-lucky bunch.

Kamehameha dominated for a half but was unable to score in a 0-0 tie at the Raiders' field yesterday.

The Warriors are 5-0-2 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play, a shade behind Iolani, which is 6-0-2.

The Raiders were well aware that the Warriors marched off the bus with carefree banter. Iolani, a bit more intense, used it as motivational fuel.

Kamehameha took 16 shots on goal -- nine more than the smaller Raiders -- but just couldn't find net. The closest the Warriors came was on Mike DeCaires' unexpected launch from 25 feet out. His shot, almost dead center, screwballed to the right and crashed off the crossbar.

That threat with less than 10 minutes to play was as shocking to DeCaires as anyone else.

"I was surprised it came off my foot like that. It dipped a little, but it didn't dip enough," the 6-foot-2 junior said.

In a relatively clean game that left both teams with a healthy collection of bruises, DeCaires' shot was a huge relief for Iolani and its faithful fans.

For Kamehameha, it was another moment of frustration. "I was like, 'Aw man! Just a little lower,' " David Gualderama said.

DeCaires was almost as disappointed.

"Aw, that was super close. No one expected that from me," he said. "But I'm just happy to play."

The Raiders came out with a conservative game plan, using a matchup zone of sorts. "We had to keep an eye on Gualderama," Iolani head coach Ric Miller said. "We emphasized keeping a guy on him at all times. He can break down anyone one on one."

Still, Kamehameha had nine shots on goal in the first half to Iolani's three. Iolani often had three defenders behind the action. Cody Takata had his share of chances, missing on a 35-yarder, a 10-yarder down the middle on a 3-on-1 situation, and a 15-yard header on a cross.

Gualderama opened the second half with a close, left-footed miss from 5 yards out on a breakaway.

The real Iolani, says Gualderama, showed up in the second half. Goalkeeper Nick Freitas had an outstanding performance, stepping up to Iolani's aggressive attacks.

Twice, he stopped passes from the corner by reserve Michael Contee, and twice more he stopped forward Riley Bruhn -- stunning him on a collision the latter time.

Freitas, a baseball standout, came up with the play of the game, making a diving stop on a 5-yard shot by Adam Inaba off a well-placed corner kick.

Miller, like Kamehameha head coach Andrew Ah Nee, took the tie in stride.

"This kind of game makes me proud of Hawaii soccer. They gave us no space to breathe, and made us work so hard to get the ball. By the time we got the ball, we were out of breath," he said.

"We're happy with the way we played," Ah Nee said. "We're pretty even now. The first time, we felt we dominated that game. This time, we dominated part of the game. Defensively, we played well, but we needed to take the shots earlier when we had them."
