A 63-year-old man was in critical condition Tuesday after he was struck in the head during a road rage incident with occupants of another vehicle in Nanakuli, police said.

When officers arrived, the victim initially declined to file a police report, police said. The victim's condition worsened after he was taken to the hospital, police said.

Driver arrested after SUV crash injures 3

Police arrested a 20-year-old Kailua man for investigation of driving under the influence of intoxicants following a single-vehicle accident yesterday that left two people in critical condition.

Police said the accident happened about 5:05 a.m. Tuesday along Kahuapaani Street in Halawa.

Police said the suspect apparently lost control of a blue four-door 2000 GMC Jimmy, hit the curb, a guardrail, then the median and then crossed over the lanes heading in the opposite direction before coming to rest against the opposite sidewalk and guardrail.

The front-seat passenger, a 23-year-old man, and a 48-year-old man in the back seat were taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

A third passenger, whose age was not available, suffered serious injuries, police said. The suspect left the scene but was later found and arrested, police said.

Police said none of the occupants of the sport utility vehicle wore seat belts, and speed was an apparent factor in the accident.

Charred body found in house fire's remains

HILO >> Big Island police are investigating a case in which the charred body of an unidentified person was found in the smoldering remains of a Puna District house fire yesterday.

Responding to an 8:15 a.m. call from neighbors on 18th Street in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision, police and firefighters found the house engulfed in flames, they said.

The body was so badly burned that authorities could not identify the sex, they said.

An autopsy was set for tomorrow to determine the identity and cause of death.

Fire Capt. Pomai Wela described the house as a small, one-story structure with a loft, set back amidst vegetation so that it was not easily seen from the unpaved street.

The nearest house was about 50 yards away, he said.

A neighbor was in the yard but could not approach the house because of the extent of the fire, Wela said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but there was nothing visible that would immediately suggest a cause, he said.
