Hawaii winless at U.S. Championships

Hawaii fighters went 0-for-3 on the first day of the Everlast U.S. Boxing Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo., yesterday, but seven more local fighters will get their shots today.

Enriquez Tangaro of Waianae lost his 132-pound bout 24-11, Brent Rodriguez of Kurtistown lost 29-6 at 152 pounds and Zacheryi Ilarraza of Paia, Maui dropped his 165-pound test 32-16.

Seven local fighters will go today, including Waianae's Jeffrey and Richard Pelen, Honolulu's Ryan Bolen and Adam Rodriguez of Pearl City. The tournament is held to determine the field for the Olympic trials.

Hawaii water polo players named All-Americans

Five Hawaii players were named to the 2003 Boys California-Hawaii High School All-American teams. Goalie James Street led the selections by earning fifth team acclaim. The Iolani senior was joined by teammates Damon Jones (seventh team) and Luke Oda (eighth team). Punahou seniors Billy Brady (sixth team) and Arik Look (honorable mention) also earned spots on the 11-team list (10 teams and an honorable mention team).

Honolulu Marathon watched by millions in Japan

A taped broadcast of Japanese runner Eri Hayakawa's victory in the Honolulu Marathon was seen by about 2.25 million people in her home country, race organizers said yesterday.

The 55-minute program was shown on eight Tokyo Broadcast System stations on Monday, race organizers said in a news release.

Hayakawa's victory in the marathon was the first by a Japanese runner and ended a seven-year domination of the women's race by Russian runners. The 22-year-old college student from Tokyo finished the race in two hours, 31 minutes and 59 seconds. Jimmy Muindi of Kenya won the men's division, finishing in 2:12:59.

Snoop Dogg's football team to play here

Rapper Snoop Dogg and his Semi Pro tackle football team will take on the Oahu Hawaiian Warriors on Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. The contest is for charity and will be held the week of the Pro Bowl.

All proceeds go to Snoop's Save a Life Foundation and a non-profit Oahu charitable organization. The rapper leads an undefeated All-Star team that includes former Division I athletes.
