Skinny TV chefs

Joining the ranks of local television chefs are Chai Chaowasaree and Beth-Ann Nishijima. Their cooking show, "Two Skinny Chefs," debuts Jan. 24 on KGMB.

Chaowasaree, of Chai's Island Bistro and Singha Thai Cuisine, and Nishijima, of Nori's Restaurant in Hilo, will feature segments on dining, travel and entertainment, along with cooking tips.

Their show will air at 6:30 p.m. Saturdays and be rebroadcast at 4 p.m. Sundays.

Celebrate local flavors

A six-week series of food festivals begins this weekend at Times Supermarkets, featuring products from more than 20 local food processors.

The Hawaii Food Manufacturers and American Savings Bank are partners in presenting the festivals, which will offer tastings of Hawaii-made products such as cookies, sausage, wonton, hot sauces, soups and Hawaiian food.

The festivals will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be held at these Times locations:

Saturday: Kahala
Jan. 24: Waimalu
Jan. 31: Koolau
Feb. 7: Royal Kunia
Feb. 14: Beretania Street
Feb. 21: Aiea

Tequila for a cause

Dip into the fountain at Compadres Bar & Grill for a shot of tequila and the chance to donate to a fund supporting artist Peggy Chun.

As part of the restaurant's 20th anniversary celebration, Compadres' owner Rick Enos is setting up a Rick's Tequila Fountain of Pain, offering $2 shots that will go to Chun, who is undergoing treatment for Lou Gehrig's disease.

Chun -- "a great fan of tequila," according to Enos -- received more than $30,000 through a previous fund-raiser at Compadres.

The tequila will flow today through Sunday. Call 591-8307.

Who's Hughes?

The Alliance for Drama Education's T-Shirt Theatre of Kalihi will stage "Langston Who?" at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow and 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Farrington High School Auditorium.

The student production is a tribute to the works of the poet Langston Hughes, presented in celebration of the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.

T-Shirt Theatre has been described as "a low-tech, high-zest" theater company geared toward giving students an opportunity to perform works that resonate with their peers.

A veteran's view

Louis Baldovi, editor of "A Foxhole View: Personal Accounts of Hawaii's Korean War Veterans," will be featured in a "Meet the Author" program at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hawaii State Library's Hawaii & Pacific Reading Room.

Baldovi, who lives in Kaneohe, was a rifleman with the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division. His presentation is based on the experiences of Hawaii's soldiers in battle, in the hospitals and POW camps. Following the talk, Baldovi and fellow Korean War veterans will answer questions.

Journey to Bountiful

The Actors' Group will be hosting auditions for Horton Foote's "The Trip to Bountiful" from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday and 7 to 10 p.m. Monday at the Yellow Brick Studio, 625 Keawe St.

Director Sharon Adair is looking for six to eight men ages 20 to 65, and two to four women ages 18 to 50. All should be comfortable with a Southern accent.

The story offers a bittersweet glimpse into the life of an elderly rural Texas woman, forced to live with her son and his petulant wife in a tiny Houston apartment, all the while longing to return to Bountiful, the farm town of her youth.

The principal role of Carrie Watts will be double cast with Mary Frances Kabel-Gwinn and Jo Pruden. They show runs March 17 to April 18.

Art and math meet

For those numerically and artistically inclined, Carol Bier and Dave Masunaga will present an illustrated program at 6 p.m. tomorrow,  focusing on the intersections of Islamic art and mathematics at the Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Bier is the first scholar in residence at Duke's former home, Shangri La, and a research associate at the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C.

Masunaga teaches geometry and design science at Iolani School.

Creative movements

Registration is under way for a creative dance workshop, "Moving the Human Spirit," taking place 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 24 at Calvary-by-the-Sea, 5339 Kalanianaole Highway in Aina Haina.

Doug Victor will share an improvisational approach to the art of body movement pioneered by Barbara Mettler.

The cost of the workshop is $20, with attendance limited to 30. Checks payable to Sacred Dance Guild Hawaii may be mailed to Pulelehua at CBTS, 5339 Kalanianaole Highway, Honolulu 96821.
