Frazier expecting
suspensions

Commissioners believe players
from both teams should be punished
for the Hawaii Bowl brawl

The commissioners of the Western Athletic Conference and Conference USA agree players from both teams should be suspended for their roles in a brawl after last month's Sheraton Hawaii Bowl at Aloha Stadium, according to a statement yesterday from Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier.

Specific players and lengths of the suspensions have not been determined yet.

"They will meet tomorrow to finalize and hopefully come to an agreement on all players involved in the incident," Frazier said in the statement. "Both of them have acknowledged that there will be suspensions in order for both teams."

The WAC's Karl Benson and C-USA's Britton Banowski are both at the NCAA convention in Nashville, Tenn.

"Hopefully, we can come to an agreement soon. It looks like this will take until the middle of next week to complete," Frazier said.

Players from both teams fought for 10 minutes after the Dec. 25 Hawaii Bowl, in which Hawaii beat Houston 54-48 in triple-overtime.

The Houston Chronicle reported earlier this week that Cougars athletic director Dave Maggard said the Houston players acted in self-defense.

The brawl was similar to one that Hawaii had with Cincinnati after a game, also at Aloha Stadium, in 2002. One difference is the game last month -- as well as the brawl -- was televised nationally by ESPN.

Millhouse out: Former Hawaii cornerback Kelvin Millhouse will not play in today's East-West Shrine game because of a foot injury he suffered in the Hawaii Bowl.

Millhouse, who intercepted two passes in the game, sprained his right foot.

He practiced for scouts in a scrimmage with other Shrine Game players on Wednesday.

"But I'm not going to play," Millhouse said in a telephone interview yesterday. "I was advised against it, and I know I'm not 100 percent and I don't want to aggravate the injury."

Millhouse said diagnostic tests showed no broken bones in his foot.

The 6-foot-1, 206-pound Millhouse was named to the 2003 All-WAC first team. He finished his three-season UH career with 13 interceptions.

He has not been invited to the NFL Combine, but does plan to work out for NFL scouts in March in Carson, Calif.
