Raiders cruise
against Saint Louis

In the simplest of terms, Iolani was ready and Saint Louis wasn't.

In mathematical terms, the Raiders dusted the Crusaders 66-28 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu basketball opener in front of about 400 at McCabe Gym last night.

And in the words of Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan, something just wasn't right with his club.

"I told them that if they can't get fired up for the No. 1 team in the state, then something is seriously wrong," Tengan said. "They had the opportunity to play the premier program in the state and didn't show up to play. There's no excuse for that."

On the other end of the court, it was business as usual for two-time defending state champion Iolani.

Back-to-back player of the year Derrick Low scored all 12 of his points in the first half as the Raiders grabbed a 43-17 lead at the midpoint.

Saint Louis, which battled Iolani in the state final a year ago, came in looking to control the inside. The main problem, however, was that Iolani completely took the inside out of the equation by hitting nine 3-pointers, including eight in the first half.

"We really shot well tonight," Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said. "But even if we didn't shoot well, we still would have been OK because of our team defense. Every kid is buying into playing hard on defense."

Saint Louis' 6-foot-6 center Desmond Hanohano scored five early inside points, but didn't hit a field goal after the first period.

"We didn't come out focused after a lazy week of practice," Hanohano said. "(After the game) Coach told us we could give up and call it a season or come to practice tomorrow and pick things up."

Shooting guard Ryan Hirata led the Raiders' 3-point brigade with three from beyond the arc. He finished with a game-high 14 points.

Low, as is his custom, dominated the flow of the game, and his uncanny control was a calming effect for his teammates.

"He (Low) is a lot of levels higher than the rest of us," said Kyle Pape, who added 10 points and hit two treys. "He's got great leadership and is one of the hardest workers. He's the one who pushes us.

"Our outside shot was working because the players aren't selfish. We had a lot of patience and we trust in each other to make those outside shots."

Low played sparingly in the second half. Guards Vinny Nip and Kawika Shoji were impressive in backup roles in the final 16 minutes. Nip also hit a pair of 3s, while Shoji contributed with eight points along with some steals and assists.

"If Iolani makes contested 3s, that would be OK, but we didn't contest enough of those," Tengan said. "The disappointing thing is that the boys knew it going in that they would need to work hard on defending that outside game."

Mugiishi said Saint Louis usually starts slow (because many of the players are involved in football, which overlaps the start of basketball training) and expects a much better game the next time around.

"Early in the season, defense is usually ahead of offense," Mugiishi said. "Our defense played well and their offense isn't clicking yet."
