Inouye to take part in exchange of U.S. and Chinese lawmakers

Members of the United States and Chinese congresses will take part in an interparliamentary exchange under an agreement announced in Hawaii yesterday, an official said.

Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, president pro tempore of the Senate, and Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye will serve as chairman and co-chairman of the U.S. group taking part in the exchange, said Jennifer Mies, director of president pro tempore affairs.

Stevens and Inouye signed a memorandum of understanding to formally establish the initiative last night in Honolulu.

Both met with a high-level delegation of Chinese officials over the past two days to work out details of the program, Mies said. It has not been determined which members of Congress will take part in the exchange, though it likely would include a bipartisan group, Mies said.
