State halts tree recycling
collection sites


The state Department of Health is discontinuing the annual Christmas tree recycling collection sites at schools and parks on Oahu but urges all residents to take advantage of other recycling alternatives.

The department said Oahu residents can leave their trees in front of their homes for the city and county's curbside green-waste collection program, available year-round.

Trees must be bare of all decorations and removed from plastic tree bags. Flocked trees cannot be recycled.

Do not drop off trees at any of the former city tree recycling sites at schools and parks, the department said. However, tree recycling options are available on all islands. They include:

On Oahu

Trees may also be dropped off at any of the seven Oahu Refuse & Recycling Convenience Centers. The centers are open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Locations and phone numbers of these centers are:

>> Ewa -- Geiger Road, near gate to former Barbers Point NAS, 226-2996.

>> Laie -- behind the city's Laie Corporation Yard, 293-8714.

>> Wahiawa -- intersection of Kamananui Road and Wilikina Drive, 621-3648.

>> Waianae -- off Plantation Road, next to the Waianae Landfill, 696-4203.

>> Waimanalo -- Hihimanu Street near the sewage treatment plant, 259-7182.

>> Waipahu -- Waipahu Depot Road, near the Police Academy, 676-8878.

>> Kawailoa -- Kawailoa Road, 637-5511.

Trees will also be accepted at:

>> Hawaiian Earth Products Leeward (Campbell Industrial Park), Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Saturday, 7:30 to 3 p.m., 682-5895.

>> Hawaiian Earth Products Windward (Kailua), daily, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 261-5877.

On the Big Island

Trees will be accepted through Jan. 6 at 10 Solid Waste Division transfer stations:

>> East Hawaii -- Hilo, Keaau, Pahoa

>> West Hawaii -- Kealakehe, Keauhou, Puako

>> South Hawaii -- Waiohinu

>> North Hawaii -- Honokaa, Waimea, Kaauhuhu

Trees will be chipped on site, and chips may be picked up from Jan. 7 through 14 at the same locations. Signs are posted at selected locations for tree drop-off.

On Kauai

Trees may be dropped off at these county transfer stations, open every day except holidays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.:

>> Hanalei, 5-3781 Kuhio Highway, 826-7070

>> Kapaa, 5051 Kahi Road, 822-7334

>> Lihue, 3450 Ahukini Road, 241-6854

>> Hanapepe, 4380 Lele Road, 335-0624

Trees also will be accepted at:

>> Kekaha Landfill, open daily except holidays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., 337-9213.

>> Kauai Nursery and Landscaping, 3-1550 Kaumualii Highway, 245-7747. Trees will be accepted 24 hours a day. Drop off trees outside the main entrance gate, on Kaumualii, about a mile south of Puhi.

In Maui County

Residents may drop off trees at:

>> Maui Earth Compost Co., Hansen and Pulehu roads, Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

>> Maui E.K.O., Central Landfill on Pulehu Road, Monday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

>> Olowalu Recycling Center, Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

>> Hana Landfill, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon.

>> Molokai Naiwa Landfill, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to noon.

>> Lanai Co. Nursery, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

>> Kahulu, Papa Avenue Soccer Field
