Konami hooks up with Honolulu Marathon

Honolulu Marathon president Jim Barahal said that Konami, a corporation that reported $2.1 billion in revenue this year, has signed a three-year deal as a supporting sponsor of the event.

Japan Airlines will remain the title sponsor of the marathon, which is in its 31st year and has grown into one of the top five marathons in the world.

"We now have the most powerful sponsorship roster of any event in Hawaii and one of the most powerful in the entire world of running," Barahal said in a release. "Our ability to attract and maintain private corporate sponsors like Konami is critical to the lifeblood of the event because, unlike many events in Hawaii, we receive no state funding."

UH swimmers beat all comers in double dual

In a double dual meet featuring four visiting schools, Hawaii's men and women's swimming and diving teams went undefeated last night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine boosted their season dual record to 11-2 and the UH men pushed theirs to 10-3.

The Wahine 200 medley relay team of YingJuan Zhen, Nicole Mackey, Katie Clewett and Dena Quick recorded their season-best time (1:44.60) while helping the Hawaii women to a 68-34 win over Oregon State, a 71-15 win over Cincinnati and 56-30 defeat of Northwestern. The Wahine also featured Mia Broden's 55.03 clocking in the 100 fly, second best all-time at UH.

Cheyne Bloch and Kurt Boehm each won two events for the Hawaii men, who beat Dartmouth 79-15 and Cincinnati 56-39.

Hawaii hosts the Aileen Soule Sprint Meet Jan. 3 and the Rainbow Invite Jan. 3 at Duke Kahanamoku.

North Dakota, Drury cruise on Big Island

KAILUA-KONA >> NCAA Division II No. 1 North Dakota got 23 points and 12 rebounds from Kristi Boese on the way to a 70-50 win over College of the Ozarks on the final day of the AmeriSport Coconut Coast Classic yesterday.

No. 8 Drury dominated the second game in beating California State-Monterey Bay 110-50. Bethany Creed's 19 points led 12 players in the scoring column for Drury.

Chee, Joseph named USA Tennis All-Americans

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. >> Honolulu's Vicky Chee and Koloa, Kauai's Drlene Joseph were among 27 tennis teachers from across the country to be named to the United States Tennis Association's USA Tennis All-America Team.

"The teachers named ... breathe life into local programs for current, returning, and potential players, and are the true champions of tennis," said USTA Community Tennis Chief Executive Kut Kamperman in a release.

Chee works out of Ala Moana Regional Park and Joseph teaches at Hanapepe Park.

Sea Warriors lose again

Marvin Noble turned the ball over with eight seconds left in a tie game, giving Hawaii Pacific a 76-73 loss to Alaska Anchorage yesterday at McCabe Gym.

Alaska Anchorage converted after Noble's mistake to improve to 9-2. HPU dropped to 1-8.

Noble and Aaron Abrams led HPU with 20 points.

MISO title up for grabs Sunday

Lanikai Tuesday and HPU White will face off for the Men's Island Soccer Organization's division I championship at the Waipio Soccer Stadium in Waipahu Sunday.

Kickoff is at 3 p.m., with the divsion II match between Kahekili and Aloha Amazon beginning at 1 p.m. The winner of that contest will move up to the top division next season.

Lanikai Tuesday, which is based in Kailua and is one of the league's first teams, has the league's best defense and gets its scoring from Todd Van Inns. Lanikai hasn't won a championship since 2000, and finished the regular seaosn 10-3-1 with 52 goals and only 10 against. HPU White handed Lanikai one of its three losses, winning 2-1 earlier this year. HPU White is 13-1 this season and boasts the top two scorers in the league, Adolfo Gentil and Jimmi Hemmenbach.
