Jake Chrisman scored 25 points as Brigham Young-Hawaii beat visiting Notre Dame de Namur 68-52 in a college basketball game last night at the Cannon Activities Center in Laie.

Shawn Opunui scored 14 points and Michael Stowell added 12 for the Seasiders, who also got 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds from Austin Smylie.

Nate Jackson assigned to Hawaiian Islanders

Former Waianae and Hawaii safety Nate Jackson is the newest member of the Hawaiian Islanders arenafootball2 team.

Jackson is coming back from a viral infection that led to surgery involving a heart valve replacement last year.

"I told (Islanders general manager) Chris Dey about him, and he gave him a call," Islanders coach Cal Lee said. "I think he'll be a defensive specialist. I look forward to him being in the same secondary with Eddie Klaneski."

Jackson, who made 318 tackles in his UH career, had a tryout with the Tennessee Titans before he got sick.

"I've kept in touch with the Titans and they said there is still a chance they could pick me up," Jackson said in a release. "If not, they said I could sign and be sent to NFL Europe."

The Islanders, going into their third season, will hold an open tryout on Feb. 22 (site to be determined) and start training camp March 17.

Rodrigues on his way to Colorado Springs

Adam Rodrigues of Pearl City stopped Waianae's Kini Sofa to move one spot closer to earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic boxing team Friday.

Rodrigues, 17, won Hawaii's under-19 title by forcing the referee to stop the fight after three standing eight counts. Rodrigues, a 119-pounder, and the eight other champions will have a chance to compete at the U.S. Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., January 10-18.

Jeffrey Pellen Jr. of Waianae was named the outstanding boxer of the tournament for winning the 141-pound title.

Other champions were Richard Pelen Jr. of Waianae at 125 pounds, Enriquez Tangaro of Waianae (132), Brent Rodrigues of Palolo (152), Zachery Ilarraza of Wailuku (165), Christopher Downs of Palolo (178), Ryan Bolen of Kakaako (201) and Tinei Su'a of Kakaako (201+).
