New Hawaii Kai pub to
offer ales and lagers from
Kona Brewing Co.


Kona Brewing Co. opens a new pub at Koko Marina Center in Hawaii Kai on Wednesday.

The next day, the new pub will offer Hawaii Public Radio members a special dinner, with 100 percent of revenue benefiting the nonprofit organization. Kona Brewing Co. expects to raise $6,000 for HPR through the event.

The new pub seats 175 -- but more important, offers 24 beer taps from which will issue all of Kona Brewing Co.'s ales and lagers, including Black Sand Porter, Castaway IPA, Da Grind Buzz Kona Coffee Imperial Stout, Hula Hefeweizen and Old Blowhole Barley Wine. Specially brewed for the opening is Koko Loco Coconut Milk Stout.

There will be food, as well: pizzas, pupus, sandwiches, salads and dessert. Signature dishes include the KBCilla Po'okela, a quesadilla stuffed with kalua pig; Mac Nut Pesto Cheese Bread, made with Fire Rock Pale Ale focaccia bread; and the Porterhouse Dip, a roast beef sandwich marinated in Black Sand Porter and served with a porter au jus.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Call 394-KONA.

What's new?

Cold Stone Creamery: The newest location of the ice cream parlor has opened at Pearlridge Center, offering made-to-order combinations with "mix-ins" that are folded into the ice cream on frozen granite stones. Find the new creamery in the Downtown section of the mall. Call 485-2421.

Fish & Poi: The Outrigger Napili Shores on Kauai has opened an oceanview restaurant that showcases fresh fish, prime rib, pasta and salads. Among the featured dishes at Fish & Poi are Taro Salad, made with baby lettuce and taro from Maui and Molokai sweet potatoes; and Mahimahi in Banana Leaves, with ginger, lemongrass, ogo and shiitake mushrooms. The restaurant is open 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. Call 800-688-7444.

Panya Bistro: The popular bakery chain opens a restaurant in Ala Moana Center on Friday, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner items, as well as new pastries and desserts. Hours at the bistro will be 7 a.m. to midnight Monday to Saturday and 8 a.m. to midnight Sunday. The new bistro will be on the mauka side of the center, at mall level next to Gap. Call 946-6388.

Holiday dining

Kuhio Beach Grill: Christmas Day dinner buffet includes carving station with prime rib and ham; entrees of turkey, pork loin and Thai curry; dim sum, sushi, Asian salads; European cheeses, olives and salami. Cost is $29 ($15 children). Call 922-6611.

L'Uraku: Lunch menu Dec. 24 and 25 includes Ceviche of Scallop on the Half Shell and Baked Crab Stuffed Salmon; and entree choice of Miso Yaki Chilean Sea Bass, Quick-Braised Whole Chicken Leg or Shrimp Tempura. Dinner menu includes Ceviche of Scallop on the Half Shell, Soft Shell Crab Tempura, Ocean Raised Moi; and entree choice of Braised Veal Cheek, Oven Roasted Pork Chop, Miso Yaki Chilean Sea Bass or Seared Sea Scallops & Shrimp Combo. Cost is $25 to $27 at lunch, $37 to $42 at dinner, depending on entree choice. Call 955-0552.

Plantation Cafe: Buffets Dec. 24 and 25 feature crab legs and other seafood specialties; plus prime rib and cioppino (Christmas Eve); goose and leg of lamb (Christmas brunch) and Cantonese duck (Christmas dinner). Cost is $29.50 for the dinners, $27.50 for brunch ($13.50 children for either). Call 955-4811.

3660 on the Rise: Christmas Eve dinner buffet includes Asian Caesar Station with Popcorn Shrimp, made-to-order poke, oysters, shrimp cocktail, Chinese roast pig, seafood stew, prime rib and chocolate fondue fountain. Cost is $40 ($17 children). Call 737-1177.

Turtle Bay Resort: Palm Terrace offers Christmas Eve dinner buffet, $29.95 ($15 children). A three-course Christmas Eve dinner at 21 Degrees North includes entree of onaga, rib eye steak or portobello "filet mignon." Cost is $47. Christmas Day brunch in the Sunset Room is $36.95 ($18 children). Three-course Christmas dinner at 21 Degrees North includes entree of prime rib, Sweet-Mustard-Glazed Striped Bass or portobello.
