Shoji to speak at UH-Hilo baseball fund-raiser

Hawaii women's volleyball coach Dave Shoji will be the featured speaker at the Second Annual University of Hawaii-Hilo Baseball Program Fundraising Dinner/Auction Jan. 12 at the Naniloa Crown Room in Hilo.

The program will feature a silent auction and dinner. Tickets are $35, with corporate tables of 10 available at special rates. The fund raising will augment the Vulcan baseball operating budget.

"Dave and I have been friends for a long time and I am truly grateful that he will be able to join us in helping raise funds sorely needed by our program," UHH baseball coach Joey Estrella said in a release.

Free youth lacrosse clinics offered weekly

The Aloha Youth Lacrosse Association will conduct free clinics for boys and girls ages 7-15.

The clinics will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 14, Jan. 4, Jan. 11, Jan. 18 and Jan. 25 at Kapiolani Park.

Players are to bring a mouth guard, shoes and water.

Kekua elected statewide president of HCRA

John Kekua Jr. of Kamehameha Canoe Club and the Big Island's Moku O Hawaii Outrigger Canoe Association has been elected statewide president of the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association.

The HCRA represents six outrigger canoe associations and more than 10,000 paddlers.

In its annual meeting last week the HCRA also honored outgoing president Michael A. Tongg for his contribution to the sport over the last two decades.

Seasiders' Kalabic is first-team All-WWPA

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Vanja Kalabic was named first-team all-conference for the second season by the Western Water Polo Association.

The junior from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, scored 75 goals this season to help the Seasiders to a 15-7 record. BYUH finished the year with a No. 16 national ranking and fifth in the WWPA tournament.

Jackson, Dahlberg voted Wahine softball captains

Senior Marie Jackson and junior Denise Dahlberg were named captains of the 2004 Hawaii softball team following a vote by their teammates.

Jackson, an outfielder, was 9-for-9 stealing bases in 2003, while Dahlberg, a catcher, played in every game and was named second-team All-Western Athletic Conference.

The Rainbow Wahine will play a home exhibition game Jan. 24. The Hawaii Paradise Classic Tournament officially opens the season Feb. 4-8, with Tennessee, Oregon State, St. Mary's, Brigham Young and Alabama-Birmingham in the field.

Perfect ride highlights first day of Billabong Pro

Reigning five-time world champion Layne Beachley's perfect 10-point ride highlighted the first day of the Billabong Pro Maui Women's World Championship Tournament.

The Australian was in the barrel for at least five seconds before emerging to loud applause and unanimous 10s.

"It's my first perfect 10 in a contest," she said in a release, "and what a place to score it."

Hawaii's Keala Kennedy, Megan Abubo and Rochelle Ballard also advanced to the third round, which is expected today.
