Ishii, Castillo Jr., qualify for Sony Open

David Ishii and Ron Castillo Jr. beat 49 other professionals for two qualifying spots in the 2004 Sony Open. Ishii carded a 33-37--70 while Castillo was steady, shooting 36-34--70 at the Waialae Country Club.

Two other spots were also awarded to Kevin Hayashi, the Aloha Section PGA Player of the Year, and to Jonathan Ota, who shot a 38-37--75 and beat Mike Kim (40-35--75) on the first hole of a playoff. Ota was one of 12 amateurs from the Governor's Cup standings competing for a spot in the Open.

The Aloha Section PGA will also hold an open Monday qualifier on Jan. 12 at the Pearl Country Club in which four players will qualify for the event. For information, call 593-2230.

Mackey earns WAC honor

Hawaii swimmer Nicole Mackey was named the Western Athletic Conference swimming and diving athlete of the week. The freshman advanced to the finals of the Texas Invitational after finishing the 200 IM in 2 minutes, 2.19 seconds, the best time posted in the 200 IM for Hawaii this season. In the finals, Mackey was sixth. She also swam the 100 backstroke in 55.40 for an NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Yamauchi brothers earn silver medals

Bryce and Kyle Yamauchi earned silver medals at the American Open Weightlifting Championships last weekend in Atlanta. Bryce Yamauchi (123 pound class) lifted 209 pounds in the snatch and 264 pounds in the clean and jerk for a grand total of 473 pounds.

Kyle Yamauchi, the elder brother, competed in the 136-pound class. He totaled 523 pounds (237 pounds snatch, 286 pounds clean and jerk) in the three-day competition.

Boxing championship at Waimanalo District Park

The Hawaii Boxing regional championship will be tomorrow and Friday at Waimanalo District Park. Back to defend their titles are amateurs Enriquez Tangaro, Jeffrey Pelen Jr., Brett Rodrigues, and Shawn Murphy.

The champions will advance to the 2004 U.S. Championships in January at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The finalists will receive an automatic berth to the Olympic Trials.
