Gingerbread winners

Unifab Industries' Hawaiian-style beachside mansion, complete with gelatin waves and a surfing Santa, won top honors in the Fourth Annual Gingerbread Festival, held Sunday at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

Corporate teams paid $600 each to compete for bragging rights in the benefit for Easter Seal's Hawaii sponsored by chef Alan Wong.

They were given two hours to craft creations out of pre-baked slabs of gingerbread, bags of frosting and candy pieces. The finished work ran from traditional gingerbread villages to a ship sailing past Aloha Tower to a gingerbread model of Aloha Stadium.

Unifab won the overall prize, plus first place in the Island Style category and in the amateur division.

Matson Navigation Co. won first price in the Corporate category and the Hyatt Regency Waikiki in the Traditional category as well as first place in the professional division.

Atlas Insurance won the Team Spirit award, dinner for 10 at Alan Wong's Restaurant.

Health holiday eating

Dr. Terry Shintani, creator of "The Hawaii Diet," will provide alternatives to fat-laden holiday dishes at the December lecture of The Vegetarian Society of Hawaii, 7 p.m. Saturday at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Park.

Shintani is the author of "The Eat More, Weigh Less Diet," "The Hawaii Diet" and "The Good Carbohydrate Revolution," will be joined by Yana Lehua, a vegetarian for more than 25 years, who has given hundreds of cooking demonstrations as part of the Down To Earth Community Outreach Team.

Admission is free and free refreshments will be served. Call 944-VEGI.

Dining with Santa

Breakfast at the Hard Rock Café: A buffet breakfast includes a goodie bag and photo with Santa for every child, 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and Dec. 20 and 21. Cost is $12 (children under 2 free with paying adult). Call 955-7383.

Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii fund-raiser: Clowns, face-painting, games, crafts, entertainment and a gift comes with breakfast (8:30 to 10:30 a.m.) or lunch (noon to 2 p.m.) Saturday and Sunday at the Japanese Cultural Center. Admission is a $17 donation (children under 2 free). Call 440-4613.

Lunch at the Plantation Café: Parents dining at the Ala Moana Hotel restaurant can park their kids in a special section for lunch and a chat with Santa. Open to children ages 3 to 8, noon to 1 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 20. Children's menu includes choice of grilled cheese sandwich, hot dog or chicken fingers, with fruit punch and dessert of ice cream and a gingerbread cookie. Cost is $7. Call 955-4811.

Lunch at the Old Spaghetti Factory: Magician Carlos da Silva II entertains, noon to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sunday, Dec. 20 and 21. Call 591-2513.

'Belly'-inspired eve

SoulLenz Gallery will present "Belly of the Beauty: An Evening of Life Inspired Art & Music," from 7 to 10 p.m. today, featuring a belly-casting exhibit, silent auction and raffle.

Makana will also perform.

Kyôgen masters act

Masters of the traditional Japanese comedy form known as kyôgen will appear in a free demonstration at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 18.

During "Kyôgen: A Traditional Japanese Comedy," Mansaku Nomura, an eighth-generation descendant of a kyôgen family, and Haruo Tsukisaki will perform the story, "Bonsan: The Dwarf Tree Thief."

The tale depicts how a man, played by Nomura, tries to steal a dwarf tree (bonsan) from his friend, played by Tsukisaki. When Tsukisaki discovers the thief, he decides to teach Nomura a lesson.

Developed more than 600 years ago, kyôgen was first performed alongside noh performances. The acting style puts an emphasis on miming.

Pottery sale at YWCA

The Laniakea YWCA hosts its annual pottery sale from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

The event takes place in the Laniakea YWCA lobby at 1040 Richards St.

A portion of sale proceeds benefits the ceramics program and the YWCA, which serves more than 52,000 women and their families with transitional housing, food services, health and fitness, child care and leadership training programs.

'Peter Pan' extended

Diamond Head Theatre has announced its third and final extension for "Peter Pan." The added show will be staged at 3 p.m. Dec. 27.

As an added holiday bonus, Peter Pan and other characters from the production will meet and greet little ones (and big ones!) near the stage following all Saturday and Sunday matinee performances,

"Peter Pan" runs Thursdays to Saturdays at 8 p.m. with 4 p.m. Sunday matinees, and now three 3 p.m. Saturday matinees through Dec. 28. There is no show Christmas Day. Tickets are $12 to $42. Call 733-0274.
