Bascuk out in front at Turtle Bay Amateur

John Bascuk of Kailua finished with a 33 over his final nine holes to shoot a 69 and lead the Turtle Bay Amateur by two strokes yesterday on the resort's George Fazio course.

Bascuk overcame limited knowledge of the course compared to those who are hot on his heels. UH-Hilo golfer Hee Boem Kim, Keola Vendiola and Jonathan Mathias are all at 71 with the second round beginning today.

Boem Kim spent the summer working in the course's pro shop while Vendiola is a member of the Kahuku golf team and is a supervisor on the course's maintenance staff. Brandan Kop is three shots behind Bascuk.

Robert Ota leads the A-flight by a stroke over Greg Hurtado and John Takiyama leads the B-flight by a shot over Michael Bianchi. Chris Baker leads Willie Perreira by a stroke in the C-flight.

Donovan dishes the scoop on Hawaii Bowl

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl executive director Jim Donovan will visit the Honolulu Quarterback Club tomorrow to talk about the upcoming game.

Hawaii defensive coordinator George Lumpkin and senior offensive lineman Shayne Kajioka will talk about the team's chances in the Christmas Day game against Houston.

The buffet lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda restaurant with the program to follow at noon.

Jones, Helton at Na Koa: Hawaii coach June Jones will bring special teams coach Tyson Helton along to Na Koa's weekly meeting at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The highlight of the meeting will be Jones and Helton breaking down film of yesterday's game against Boise State.

The program begins at 11:30 a.m. and costs $13 for Na Koa members and $15 for guests.
