‘Classic Surf Series’
drops in

The local independent film festival Cinema Paradise presents, starting today, "Classic Surf Series," a seven-day showcase of surfing classics from the 1970s and the Hawaii premiere of "Singlefin: Yellow," a film by Jason Baffa.

The cast and crew from Baffa's film will be present at the Indigo restaurant downtown from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. tomorrow for a special premiere party, featuring live music by local band Resophonics (led by steel guitarist Buck Giles), featured soundtrack band White Buffalo from Huntington Beach, Calif., and Dayze Shayne, local longboard surfer and musician who's also featured in "Singlefin: Yellow." It'll cost $7 for those 21 and over.

All films will be shown at Wallace Restaurant Row.

The films being showcased are:

"Big Wednesday" (1978, directed by John Milius and starring Gary Busey, Jan-Michael Vincent and William Katt)

Written and directed by the man who also co-wrote "Apocalypse Now," Milius grew up as a surfer in Malibu and brought his own experiences to the screen to create what is regarded to be Hollywood's best attempt to depict the surfing lifestyle.

A personal epic (and a celebration of traditional values) that follows three male friends over a decade of surfing, specifically the 1960s, under the gradual encroachment of external considerations, i.e. age, the Vietnam War and responsibility, the film represents the painful growing up of the beach/youth movement and is possibly one of the best American films of its time.

There's also incredible aerial and water footage (way ahead of its time) of Sunset and Pipeline doubling for Malibu and features Gerry Lopez, Peter Townend, Ian Cairns and Bill Hamilton as stuntmen.

"Big Wednesday" will be shown in a new, pristine 35 mm print.

Show times are 4:15, 7 and 9:45 p.m. today; 7 p.m. Sunday; 4:15 p.m. Monday; 9:45 p.m. Tuesday; 4:15 p.m. Wednesday; and 4:15, 7 and 9:45 p.m. Thursday.

"Singlefin: Yellow" (2003, directed by Jason Baffa and starring Bonga Perkins, Dayze Shayne, David Kinoshita and Beau Young)

Baffa follows a yellow longboard that travels the world, shared by friends that include Tyler Hatzikian, Beau Young, Bonga Perkins, Devon Howard and David Kinoshita. It's beautifully shot on 16 mm film in California, Australia, Mexico and Japan with an original soundtrack by White Buffalo.

Show times are 1:30, 4:15, 7 and 9:45 p.m. tomorrow; 4:15 p.m. Sunday; 7 p.m. Tuesday; and 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.

"Fluid Drive" (1974, directed by Scott Ditrich and starring Rory Russell, Larry Bertleman, Gerry Lopez, Bill Hamilton and Peter Townend)

A classic soundtrack that includes Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Beatles is the backdrop to this stylish documentary, featuring the decade's surf heroes, including Barry Kanaiaupuni, Ben Aipa, Eddie Aikau, Gerry Lopez and others. It also includes some priceless Larry Bertleman footage.

Show times are 1:30 p.m. Sunday, 7 p.m. Monday and 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

"Super Session" (1975, directed by Hal Jepsen and starring Jeff Hakman, Nat Young, Rell Sunn, Gerry Lopez and Larry Bertleman)

The skateboarding segment features a very young Jay Adams and some funny Larry Bertleman helmet-cam skate footage. Jepsen's classic features some of the most iconic surfers ever in their prime surfing spots in Australia, California and here in Hawaii.

Show times are 9:45 p.m. Sunday, 9:45 p.m. Monday and 7 p.m. Wednesday.
