Car accident cuts power on Big Isle

About 850 people on the Big Island lost electrical power for a few hours early yesterday morning after a car struck a utility pole in Hilo, according to the Hawaii Electric Light Co.

HELCO reported that at 3:27 yesterday morning, the car hit and damaged a utility pole and a traffic light near Kawailani Street and Kilauea Avenue.

HELCO crews were able to restore power to all but five customers by 5:32 a.m.

HELCO crews worked yesterday to repair the damage.

More parking set for UH football game

Additional parking will be available at Ford Island, the Kam Drive-In, Leeward Community College and Radford High School for tomorrow's University of Hawaii football game against Alabama.

Parking costs $5, and the lots will open at 11:15 a.m.

Turnstiles at Aloha Stadium will open at 11:45 a.m. for the 2:45 p.m. game.

About 41,000 tickets have been distributed for the game, which will also be shown on ESPN.

Fund-raiser to help former airline worker

A concert and silent auction to raise funds for Lindsey Pollock, a former Hawaiian Airlines communications director who is seriously ill, will be held tomorrow.

The auction at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Hotel begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes San Francisco and Las Vegas vacation packages, Alfred Shaheen clothing, wine, Dolphin Sound studio time and artwork from Jean Charlot, Karel Burrows, Clarence Lee, Lynn Cook, Robert Flint and Peggy Chun.

The Makaha Sons, Karen Keawehawai'i, Jay Larrin, Melveen Leed and O'Brian Eselu will perform at 8:30 p.m. in the Ainahau Ballroom. Seating for the concert is at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $35 per person. Donations and contributions are also welcome to help pay for medical expenses.

Meeting to discuss Fort Weaver Road

The state Department of Transportation has scheduled a community meeting for Wednesday to discuss upcoming Fort Weaver Road widening projects.

The public meeting will be 6:30 p.m. at the Asing Park meeting room at 91-1450 Renton Road.

Head-on collision injures Wahiawa man

A 30-year-old Wahiawa man was in critical condition with head, leg and internal injuries yesterday after a head-on motor vehicle collision late Wednesday night.

Police suspect speed and alcohol were factors in the collision.

The victim, whose name was not released, was rushed to the Queen's Medical Center. Police said the victim was driving his black 2004 Mazda RX8 east on California Avenue, but in the westbound lane.

The Mazda collided head on with a black 1999 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck that was in the westbound lane, police said. The driver of the truck, a 34-year-old male also from Wahiawa, was treated and released at the scene.

Police are still investigating.

Teen in hospital after hit by truck

A teenager was flown to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition yesterday afternoon after being hit by a pickup truck.

The incident occurred near Pupukea and Alapia roads.

No one else was injured in the accident.
