Wave marks
23rd year

TOMORROW night, the venerable Wave Waikiki will gear up once again to celebrate another year of existence at its perch on the edge of Oahu's tourist capital.

Following in the footsteps of bands like The Squids, Hat Makes the Man, Surf Psycho Sexy and Rail, Missing Dave headlines the Wave's 23rd Anniversary Party.

"This is our third biggest party of the year, after Halloween and New Year's," said Wave promotions director Flash Hansen. "It's like a high school reunion or something ... they just come out of the woodwork for this thing."

Also sticking around is San Francisco-based DJ Mei Lwun, who'll spin a "mash-up" of '80s and '90s classics, hip-hop, house and rock remixes after the live entertainment winds down. There'll also be free pupus from California Rock 'n Sushi, and over $4,000 in prizes is scheduled to be given away throughout the evening.

And what would a Wave anniversary be without an impromptu jam session with some of the bands from the bar's past? "We're keeping it a surprise, but we've got about 10 bands confirmed to come down," Hansen said. "There's going to be a few cool surprises that people won't be expecting."
