The Honolulu chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts feted its best last night, presenting awards to winners of the 2003 "Hawaii's 5-0" design competition at the Hawaii Convention Center.

The awards are intended to honor local graphic designers and the Hawaii companies that print the work.

The top five of 50 winners were:

Clarence Lee for his 2003 Chinese New Year's card, printed by Hagadone Printing Co.; Info Grafik for its Kukio grand opening event identity and materials, printed by Electric Pencil; Anne Bush Design for The Contemporary Museum project entitled, "Trust," printed by Quality Graphics; Stuart Henley, University of Hawaii Art Department, for "Intersections" posters for 2003 and 2004, printed by Edward Enterprises; and Tsunami Marketing for its Safari Helicopters Web site.

Three students from the University of Hawaii at Manoa were also honored for excellence in student design, they were Lauren Hara, May Cacal and Michael Sapry.

Excellence in printing awards were presented to Edward Enterprises for its Lanikea brochure designed by Joyce Timpson & Associates and Design Unlimited; to Electric Pencil for TNC Last Stand, "The Vanishing Hawaiian Rain Forest," designed by Ostrander & Chu Inc.; and to Hagadone Printing Co. for an architectural identity brochure for John Hara Associates Inc., designed by The Design Network.

Top five and printing excellence winners received trophies and certificates from their respective professional organizations. Student-winners received certificates and free one-year student memberships in AIGA valued at $65.

Designers were invited to submit work in print, online or environmental graphics categories, as long as it was designed completely in Hawaii. Entries were judged by mainland graphic designers.
