Sea Warriors outlast Roadrunners

Hawaii Pacific is a step closer to keeping the NCAA Division II volleyball championship in the islands, beating Cal State Bakersfield 30-26, 24-30, 21-30, 30-23, 15-11 in the first round of the NCAA tournament last night at La Jolla, Calif.

Next up for fifth-seeded HPU today is host UC San Diego, the nation's top team. HPU lost to the Tritons in five games this season.

Barbara Martin and Nadica Karleusa led the Sea Warriors with 15 kills, while Vera Oliveira dished out 50 assists.

Brigham Young-Hawaii won the title last year and Hawaii teams have won the championship in four of the past five years.

Symons to play in Hula Bowl

Texas Tech quarterback B.J. Symons has accepted an invitation to compete in the 2004 Hula Bowl. In his first year as a starter Symons has dazzled, passing for 5,106 yards and 47 TDs. The senior needs 83 yards to break Ty Detmer's NCAA single-season record for passing yards (5,188) and 2 yards to break David Klinger's record (5,220) for total offense. The Hula Bowl is Jan. 17.

Alaska-Anchorage routs Hawaii Pacific

Four players scored in double-digits as the University of Alaska-Anchorage routed Hawaii Pacific University 101-72 in the AT&T Alascom Jamboree. Peter Bullock led the Seawolves with 30 points.

Aaron Abrams scored 25 points and Marvin Noble chipped in 18 for the Sea Warriors.

Patacchia, Sullivan, Centeio advance

Conditions at the Vans Hawaiian Pro weren't ideal yesterday but they didn't prevent Hawaii's Fred Patacchia, Pancho Sullivan and Joel Centeio from advancing to the next round. All three won their heats despite imperfect waves caused by a 4- to 6-foot northeast swell.

Warriors sweep again

The Hawaii men's volleyball team needed even less time to beat George Mason yesterday in an exhibition match on the Big Island. The Warriors swept the Patriots 30-15, 30-20, 30-22 in an hour at the Hilo Civic Auditorium.

"We played a lot better. Both teams played a lot better," Hawaii coach Mike Wilton said. "Danny (Rasay) set tonight. Delano Thomas played real well. Arri Jeschke had a real good, all-around match."

The teams play today on Maui at 7 p.m.
