11-year-old advances in women's Roxy Pro

Eleven-year-old Carissa Moore was one of four Hawaii surfers to advance yesterday to the quarterfinals of the Roxy Pro women's surf meet at Haleiwa.

Moore battled 4- to 6-foot waves and blustery winds to beat Heather Clark of South Africa and Australians Serena Brooke and Dara Penfold.

"It was a little bit scary, but I've surfed out here in competitions before and I've been out here practicing for this," Moore said. "I was definitely excited to be out there. My goal for this event was just to do my best for me. I'm pretty surprised."

The other Hawaii surfers to advance are Melanie Bartels, Keala Kennelly and Megan Abubo.

The first round of the men's Hawaiian Pro also got under way yesterday, with Hawaii's Fred Patacchia and Raymond Reichle winning heats. The remainder of the men's first round was scheduled to conclude today.

Futures Tour breezes into Waikoloa

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii >> Tradewinds swirled through the courts at up to 35 mph yesterday as top seed Lamine Ouahab advanced in the second round of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Futures tournament.

Algerian Ouahab beat Hilton Waikoloa pro Brad Erickson 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the Futures event, which is similar to golf's Nationwide Tour.

"It was tough to play your best tennis out there on the courts today," Erickson said. "But the match gives me a good indication of where my game is as I prepare to play on the Futures Tour full time next year."

Waikoloa tennis director Erik Vervloet teamed with his student, Kean Feeder, to defeat Slovakian Luka Gregorc and Russian Fritz Wolmarans 7-6 (6), 6-7 (4), 6-3.

At 35, Vervloet is almost 20 years older than many of the Futures competitors.

"I know my time is coming," he said. "Just not quite yet."

Matches were scheduled to continue today with semifinals on Saturday and finals for Sunday. For information, call 886-2222.
