Reggae legend to take
control at Ho’s house


REGGAE fans will be out in force this weekend for a performance by the legendary Mikey Dread.

Also known as "Dread at the Controls," the reggae pioneer returns to Honolulu after visiting as one of the headliners for 2001's Bob Marley Tribute Concert. He's in town this time around to support the album "Rasta in Control," his first new release in over a decade.

Following performances earlier this month in Rome and Seattle, Dread will appear at Don Ho's Island Grill tomorrow night, along with local artists Maacho and T.H.C. Tickets are $25 at the door, with discounted pre-sales available at Hungry Ear, Jelly's and Toogruvz. Call 528-0807 ...

LOOKING TO get into the Christmas spirit already this year? Forget about waiting for Thanksgiving to pass us by -- I've already seen holiday decorations go up around town, and that was right after Halloween!

Get into the spirit with a collection of Christmas classics called "Our Ohana's 1st Christmas," a benefit album for the Hawaii Foodbank that's been released by Ohana Records.

Local recording artists Baba B, Zacc Kekona, Vaihi, the Opihi Pickers, Pound 4 Pound, the St. Andrew's Priory Elementary Choir and others agreed to appear on the compilation, which is available right now at Borders, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Costco, Tower Records and Longs Drugs. A portion of the CD's purchase price will be donated to the Hawaii Foodbank to help feed the less fortunate ...

OUT ON the North Shore, Hawaiian Hurricane Productions and the Vans Triple Crown of Surf are celebrating the finish of the Vans Hawaiian Pro with a wrap party Saturday night.

Drop in at Breakers Restaurant starting at 9 p.m. for an evening of music and dancing with DJ Ian, giveaways by sponsors of the surf contest and a chance to meet and mingle with some of the professional surfers that are in town. Party people 21 and over welcome; call 637-9898 for more info ...

AND WAIKIKI'S Club Tabu continues to make its mark on the local night scene, adding two new parties to its weekly lineup.

On Tuesdays, DJs Billy G and Technique man the decks for "Phat Tuesdays," an 18-and-over party that gets started at 9 p.m. Call 389-3216 for info and a chance to get on the guest list.

Wednesdays at Tabu are for house and trance fans, as DJ Yume presents "PLUR" at the club. This night just got started last week, so if you're into that kind of music, be sure to stop by and show your support ...
