Versatyle Styles
hits Big Island

BIG ISLAND residents got a taste of Honolulu's party scene last weekend when Double-O-Spot and the Treehaus crew brought "Versatyle Styles" to Uncle Mikey's Nightclub in Hilo.

Unfortunately, my editors wouldn't go for the idea of letting me expense the cost of airplane tickets, a hotel room and a rental car, so I missed out on DJs Downtempo Don, G-Spot, Lava and Sovern T throwing down on wax and Waikiki B-Boys doing their thing on the dance floor. MCs Seph 1 and Killawattz da Mongoose also made the trip to the Big Island.

But at least the promoters were thinking of us Oahu folk -- while they couldn't help out with air fare or hotel accommodations, they did promise to let anyone with an airline boarding pass in for free at the party on Saturday ...

LAST WEEKEND also marked the grand opening of the Velvet Lounge, the nightspot on Keawe Street across from CompUSA formerly known as Grumpy's.

While Thursday night marked the soft opening of the club, Friday's "Tantra" party was the first widely publicized event. The Direct Descendants, a local underground hip-hop crew, hosted the 21-and-over party, with the Microscopic Syllables turning in a live performance during the evening as well.

And after spending the last month or so at Meritage in Restaurant Row, promoter Matty Liu will be taking the "Chemistry Lounge" down the street to the Velvet Lounge. As always, DJs 45 and Mr. INC will be doing their thing on the turntables, and I'm told there will be a variety of $3 drinks available the entire evening.

The word going around is that the Velvet Lounge is a bit more upscale than its predecessor, but I've got a feeling that without significant remodeling, things won't seem that much different. Let's hope the new owners can make it happen ...

LOOKING FOR some adventure? Head over to Indigo Thursday night for "Beaujolais Nouveau 2003," a worldwide celebration of French wine that takes place on the third Thursday of November every year. More than 65 million bottles of the stuff is consumed by wine drinkers annually, with Hawaii's share scheduled to be delivered to Indigo this week via a procession of Hummers.

Thursday's celebration is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.; $35 gets you a taste of both the wine and some French cuisine prepared by Chef Glenn Chu. Call 521-2900 for reservations ...
