Hawaiian groups mark 167 years
since King David Kalakaua's birth

Three Hawaiian groups gathered yesterday at the Royal Mausoleum to commemorate the 167th anniversary of King David Kalakaua's birth. A bust of the monarch was placed by his crypt at the mausoleum.

Members of the Royal Order of Kamehameha, Hale O Na Alii and Daughter and Sons of the Hawaiian Warriors formed a procession into the Royal Mausoleum's chapel during yesterday's event.

Charlotte Clarke and Bernadette Kidder waited outside the Kalakaua Crypt as ho'okupu, or the ceremonial gift-giving to a chief as a sign of honor and respect, was offered inside.
