College celebrates
centennial of aviation

The 100th anniversary of humans' journey into space is being celebrated with a month-long exhibit at Windward Community College.

"The Wright Stuff: 100 Years of Flight" opened Friday in Gallery Iolani and continues through Dec. 17.

"What makes this exhibition neat is when kids realize the accomplishments of these pioneers," said Joe Ciotti, the exhibit's project director, astronomy professor and director of the college's Center for Aerospace Education and its Imaginarium. "They may discover their own dreams, and their imaginations can take flight."

The exhibition, funded with $10,250 from the Hawaii Committee for Humanities, shows developments from the first powered flight to the astronauts' journey to the moon. The exhibit includes memorabilia and interactive computer kiosks.

A special section for "younger aviators" provides hands-on activities such as games, puzzles and airplane building.

The exhibition features a glider simulator so visitors can take a virtual flight through places such as the Grand Canyon.

Gallery hours are from 1-5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Also in celebration of the anniversary of flight, the Imaginarium will show video presentations at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3 and Dec. 17.

The Aerospace Exploration Lab and NASA Flight Training Center will offer tours.
