Makaha Sons, Choy
team up on book, CD


Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch and Crab was packed Wednesday night for a short performance by the Makaha Sons to coincide with the release of Mutual Publishing's "A Hawaiian Luau," with Sam's recipes and a CD by the Sons. Music and hula also was performed by Polynesian Cultural Center entertainers. The book's text, including recipes and "talk story," was written by Lynn Cook. Lynn couldn't contain herself during the Sons' beautiful rendition of "Lahainaluna" and broke into hula. The gorgeous photography in the book is by Douglas Peebles. Many guests, after dining on tasty luau food, purchased the book/CD package. The price is $29.95. ...

Honors for Weyand

Retired Gen. Fred Weyand will be honored Thursday as an "Everyday Hero" by the Hawaii Army Museum Society for his continuing excellence in public service to Hawaii's military and civilian communities. The former Army chief of staff will receive his award at a breakfast at the Hilton's Coral Ballroom. The general served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Howard Okada, the museum's exec director, said Fred carried a 2 handicap in golf as a young soldier and shoots in the 80s today. No doubt he is kept in shape and on his toes by wife Mary, one of the best dancers in town ...

CHEERS to Peace Wong whose birthday was on Veteran's Day. It used to be called Armistice Day, to mark the end of World War I fighting, and that's why she was named Peace. That's cool. Peace is the widow of Kelvin Wong, who owned Tasty Foods of Hawaii, the concessionaire at several public golf courses. Peace and her family continue to run the business at the Ala Wai, West Lock, Makalena, Ewa Village and Pali courses...

Melveen Leed sang at the reunion of Roosevelt's Class of '48 last month and I mistakenly wrote that she graduated from Radford much earlier than the '48ers. Everyone knows she graduated much later than the members of the '48 class. I hope Melveen, who sang at my wedding years ago, does not assault me for the error ...

Ed Wary's Auntie Pasto's Beretania marks its 20th year Nov. 24-30 with a special $20 five-course menu. Twenty different wines, each at $1 a glass, are also offered ... Moi lovers should head over to the Waikiki Parc Hotel's Kacho where chef Yuji Urawa offers an eight-course dinner through Dec. 10 that features seven preparations of moi. Cost is $65 ... The Rock was in Morton's last week enjoying a 16-ounce filet steak ... Paul Brown has opened his $1.3 million Spa Olakino in the Marriott Waikiki ...

Opera fans have a ball

THE Hawaii Opera Theatre raised more than $100,000 from the silent auction at last Saturday's Opera Ball at the Sheraton. John Rampage choreographed the can-can dancers and Sherry and Kendric Wong played the roaming cigarette girl and waiter at the event, which had a Parisian theme. The food and service were excellent ... People who dig jazz can look forward to the pops concert Friday and next Saturday when the Honolulu Symphony Pops and Matt Catingub are joined by jazz guitarist-singer John Pizzarelli and singer Jimmy Borges at the Concert Hall ...
