Denver doc tells how to achieve inner peace

A Denver physician who teaches that a person can achieve inner peace and joyful living through a combination of biofeedback technology and Eastern religions' meditative techniques will speak Tuesday at the Buddhist Study Center.

Dr. Liana Mattulich will speak on "Science and Buddhism: Dynamic Parallels Between Technology and Ancient Wisdom" in a 7 p.m. lecture at 1436 University Ave. It is free and open to the public.

Mattulich is the founder of the Inner Key organization, which presents classes and retreats combining science- and faith-based practices to reach self-regulation and awareness.

Handmade gifts galore at craft fair in Kailua

The St. Christopher's Craft Guild Fair will offer shoppers handmade holiday gift choices next Saturday.

Painted flower pots and terra-cotta platters, angel ornaments and painted boxes are among the items on sale from 9 a.m. to noon at the church at 93 N. Kainalu Drive, Kailua.

The fair will benefit the Episcopal Relief and Development fund.

Praises to be sung at 2 free music shows

Two free concerts this month will spotlight some of the liveliest ways to praise God.

>> A Mililani concert tomorrow will feature Perry and the Poorboys, a California-based Christian rock band which has produced eight albums and toured 20 countries. Christ Lutheran Church, at 95-1361 Meheula Parkway, will host the 7 p.m. performance and a 6 p.m. potluck dinner open to all concertgoers.

>> A gospel music festival, "Praising in Paradise," will be presented next Saturday at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 3950 Paine Circle. The 7 p.m. concert will feature Trinity musicians and local gospel soloists in music that is a uniquely African-American expression of faith. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will co-sponsor the event.

Conference explores service by students

Students at many schools get a hands-on lesson in citizenship by doing community service assignments.

Some of those best efforts will be explored at a conference next Saturday for students, parents, schoolteachers, counselors and church youth ministry leaders.

"Reaching Ohana, Teaching Ohana II: Learning to Serve" will be presented from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's Priory School, 224 Queen Emma Square. It is sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii and the Commission on Episcopal Schools.

Workshops will share projects that include outreach to homeless people, tutoring, business enterprises to benefit the poor and preservation of an Hawaiian fishpond. Kelley Lum Oshiro, executive director of Youth Service Hawaii, will speak.

The fee of $10 -- $5 for students -- will include lunch. For reservation information, call 536-7776, ext. 105.
